Winter fly fishing, something special
Fly fishing in the winter in Southwest Colorado and on the San Juan in northern New Mexico in the middle of winter is an amazing way to get out and a sure way to cure cabin fever. Crowd-free angling experience, with eager trout make for great days. Shhhh, we also have relatively mild winter weather.
The Winter Season
Our winter fishing season starts December 1st and lasts through the end of February.
Float or Wade
We offer float and wade trips on the San Juan in northern New Mexico and due to lower winter flows can only offer wade trips on the Animas and Pine.
Winter Guide Days
Our guide day starts around 10 and we fish till around 4 or so. Our focus is on the warmest and most productive times of the day.
Where to stay?
Many of our fishing guests will stay in or around Durango Colorado for our winter trips. There are hotels, motels, B & Bs and VRBOs available. The Animas is right there near Durango with the San Juan an easy 50-minute drive to the south. The Pine is 40 minutes away.
The Day
Most days temps will start out chilly and warm into the 40's and low 50's. Some days could be stormy and snowy. Those snow days are special that is for sure. We do have propane heaters for chilly days.
Gear
We pretty much recommend people that come out for winter fly fishing be ready for the day with the same gear you would have for the ski slopes. For winter wade trips we do supply waders and boots if you need them.
